Brown Town, a Christchurch-based collective focused on ‘celebrating and empowering Māori and Pasifika communities’, has responded to criticism over its initial tiered ticket pricing for the upcoming event WAVES: Sunday Sessions.
The collective, founded to “combat racism and foster cultural connection”, initially offered tickets at three price points: $15 for early bird, $20 for Māori and Pasifika (Tangata Moana), and $30 for allies (Tangata Tiriti).
Critics argued that the pricing model was racially discriminatory and potentially violated the Human Rights Act. In response, Brown Town revised the ticket categories to “Alofa” (love) and “Ally” access, priced at $20 and $30 respectively.
Brown Town defended its original pricing as an effort to reduce financial barriers for “historically disadvantaged” Māori and Pacific communities.
The collective highlighted that tiered pricing structures are common in efforts to prioritise affordability for specific demographics, such as students or seniors.
While the Race Relations Commissioner Melissa Derby commended the adjustments and acknowledged the organisers’ positive intentions, she urged the exploration of non-discriminatory approaches to achieve similar goals. The event, initially set for Christchurch bar Muy Muy, will now move to a new venue due to safety concerns, with Brown Town ensuring attendees are informed of the updated location.
