4.9 magnitude earthquake shakes central NZ

A “moderate” earthquake struck the lower North Island and upper South Island on Monday afternoon, hitting 15km east of Picton at 3:58 pm.

Geonet reported the quake at a depth of 35km, with its magnitude revised from 4.8 to 4.9. Tremors reached Wellington and were reported by over 13,000 people within 10 minutes, particularly across the top of the South Island and from Wellington to Taranaki on the North Island.
