Auckland and Northland brace for severe weather: Heavy rain and thunderstorms expected overnight

Commuters in Auckland are being advised to plan their journeys ahead of time due to “messy weather” and potential thunderstorms forecasted for the region overnight.

Auckland Council’s emergency management general manager, Adam Maggs, initially recommended delaying trips for a few hours in the morning but has since revised the advice, urging residents to check the forecast and plan accordingly. Heavy rain and thunderstorms, fuelled by a tropical disturbance, are expected from 8pm tonight until daylight on Friday, with the possibility of localised flooding and water pooling. Residents are also advised to secure loose items and check gutters and drains to mitigate potential damage. If life or property is at risk, 111 should be called, but for non-emergencies, blocked drains and fallen trees can be reported to the Auckland Council.

MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Auckland, warning of potential downpours with rainfall rates between 25-40mm per hour from 10pm tonight to 5am tomorrow.

Northland is also under a heavy rain watch with hazardous driving conditions expected due to surface flooding and poor visibility.

The wet weather, driven by a low-pressure system west of the country, could cause surface or flash flooding in low-lying areas and trigger slips. Despite the adverse weather, temperatures are expected to be mild for June, with highs of 18°C forecasted in both Auckland and Whangārei.

Thunderstorms and hail are possible until the evening, accompanied by windy conditions, especially in northern areas. Various regions across the country, including Tasman, Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupō, and Fiordland, are also under heavy rain warnings or watches.
