Auckland councillors have voted overwhelmingly to endorse the redevelopment of Eden Park, opting to develop a business case for the $100 million project rather than pursuing a new waterfront stadium precinct.
Although financial backing remains uncertain and stressed that Auckland Council will not be contributing funds or participating in planning or operations, councillors are urging the government to step in with funding.
However, Minister for Auckland Simeon Brown has indicated that the government’s focus remains on reducing planning and consenting obstacles.
The Eden Park Trust Board welcomed the endorsement as vital for the city and the future of New Zealand’s national stadium.
