With growing concern from ‘experts’ over the potential threat of a ‘bird flu’ pandemic, epidemiologist Michael Baker told legacy media we need to be prepared as cases of avian virus exposure continue to surface globally.
While there is currently no evidence of human-to-human transmission, data indicates a concerning case fatality rate of over 50% among individuals allegedly infected by birds.
In New Zealand, authorities from the Ministry for Primary Industries and the Department of Conservation are actively developing a national contingency plan in anticipation of a possible outbreak. Scientists were also conducting local sampling to monitor the situation.
Otago University professor Michael Baker has warned of the persistent danger posed by influenza, labeling it as the primary concern for potential global pandemics. Baker said that although the H5N1 strain had been around a long time, there was still a need for vigilance as the ‘virus’ may eventually evolve to facilitate human transmission.

However, Dr. Richard Webby, an infectious disease researcher based in the United States, was more apprehensive regarding global readiness for future pandemics. He warned of the likelihood of another ‘zoonotic spillover event’, echoing concerns raised by the World Health Organization about the lack of diagnostic capabilities worldwide.
Webby told legacy media there was a need for increased resources and global collaboration in pandemic preparedness as current efforts are ‘insufficient.’
