Olivier Mugisho had just been dropped off at his home on Friday night when the assault happened.
Arriving home, in a small cul-de-sac opposite West Auckland’s Waikumete Cemetary, Mugisho saw the street was full of gang members standing around.
He struck up a conversation with one, who appeared friendly enough, then without warning another came up and punched him in the face leaving him with a deep cut above the right eye.
Police were called and they took him to hospital for treatment but no arrest was made, even though the gang was still there. No information is available at this time as to which gang was involved.
Community leader and electrician Mugisho was in a defiant mood when he spoke to state-funded legacy media outlet NZHerald after the attack:
‘They need to face justice. I’m not scared. They’re above the law. No one has been arrested. Why? The community, they need to know what is happening.’
