Consultation opens on electronic Road User Charges system

Electronic Road User Charges system

The Government is seeking input from the technology, finance, telecommunications and retail industries as it moves toward a nationwide electronic road user charges system for light vehicles.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop said consultation had opened on proposed regulations supporting the Land Transport (Revenue) Amendment Bill, which aims to replace petrol tax with a user-pays model based on distance travelled and vehicle weight.

The reforms are designed to prepare for a future where fuel-efficient and hybrid vehicles contribute less through fuel excise despite continued road use.

Under the proposed framework, approved providers would be able to offer electronic distance recording, flexible payment methods such as subscriptions and post-payment billing, and other digital services.

The consultation also covers provider oversight, eligibility requirements and privacy protections, with the Government stressing that any new technology would need to comply with New Zealand privacy laws.

Bishop said the goal was to create a simpler and more modern transport funding system while encouraging innovation from both local and international companies.

  1. The New Zealand Company church government is seeking input from its subsidiary NGO companies in technology, finance, telecommunications and retail industries as it moves toward a nationwide electronic road user charges system for light vehicles. Won’t be a consultation, it will be a directive, another tax collecting objective.

  2. The fake democracy government needs more revenue to facilitate even more totalitarian control over the people supplying the revenue.

  3. You law-abiding f*ckers out there who think you can just be free to drive around and go on holidays to the beach or cruise the scenery on NZ roads and do it all without paying your corporate masters at the helm have got another thing coming. Expect plenty more emails and bills from “the state” suckers. Meanwhile
all you gangs and criminals out there just carry on as usual, none of this is ever gonna affect ya. The law-abiding fools will just pay for all your criminal bullsh*t instead…No problem…

  4. Chris Bishop- Globalist cuck

WE DONT WANT TO BE TRACKED, MONITORED, CORALLED, CONTROLLED OR ENSLAVED ANY FIRTHER.

  5. The outcome is to track everyone’s movements, listen to everyone’s conversations, video us and have artificial intelligence flag concerns.

Electric vehicles are not paying road user chargers. But they can use the same system as diesel vehicles used today.

Trust between citizen amd the state is at an all time low.

  6. Ignoring the tax -or levy, whatever you want to call it- Privacy is yet again under attack. I am a public servant and I can tell you that the number of programmes that are invading our privacy is staggaring. I cannot reveal those as it will identify me but I ask that you use OIA to extract as much details as possible from MSD, Health, and DIA

  7. Government calls consultation democracy. It isn’t. Its just an illusion of democracy.

Ya didn’t campaign on it, ya have no mandate.

    Referendums would fix all that.

  8. “The reforms are designed to prepare for a future where fuel-efficient and hybrid vehicles contribute less through fuel excise despite continued road use.”
That’s actually clever. Taking the vehicle weight into account means factoring in road damage at source.

  9. My power company is offering a 50% discount on an EV charging plan using off peak charging ie night time charging;
so there are many hidden incentives to go electric at this point in time, bearing in mind that this electricity is generated by burning coal. Hopefully one day vehicle manufacturers will get over the EV mistake.
