Aiden Sagala (R).

Himatjit “Jimmy” Kahlon, a Fonterra manager, was found guilty of manslaughter and possession of methamphetamine for supply following the death of 21-year-old Aiden Sagala, who died of a meth overdose after consuming a can of beer unknowingly contaminated with the drug.

The jury at the High Court in Auckland reached its verdict in just two hours, although Kahlon was acquitted of a separate charge of cocaine possession.

Prosecutors alleged Kahlon was involved in a scheme to import meth-laced beverages disguised as regular beer and kombucha, which he distributed among friends and colleagues.

Kahlon’s defense argued he was unaware of the meth contamination, claiming he had been deceived by a co-defendant with name suppression, who allegedly masterminded the operation.

Aiden’s family, who were present for the verdict. His mother described her son to media as a caring and devoted individual. Despite the tragic loss, she publicly forgave Kahlon.

Prosecutors pointed to Kahlon’s role and apparent knowledge of the drug-laden imports, citing evidence of his involvement in handling and distributing the tainted beverages.

Kahlon’s sentencing has been set for February.
