Former Bolivian president survives assassination attempt

Former Bolivian president Evo Morales reportedly survived an assassination attempt in Shinahota, Bolivia, as his vehicle came under gunfire.

Video footage posted to Morales’ social media shows him seated in the front seat of his car, with bullet holes visible in the windshield and his driver injured.

According to Morales, fourteen shots were fired at the vehicle by four hooded gunmen who emerged from two cars that intercepted his vehicle early Sunday morning.

Morales, who appeared uninjured, later gave a public speech without addressing the attack directly.

Bolivian authorities have not yet commented on the incident. Morales, who served as Bolivia’s president from 2006 to 2019, was ousted in a 2019 coup and has faced previous assassination attempts, including one in 2009.

Morales’ relationship with current president Luis Arce, his former ally, has recently become strained, though Morales condemned an attempted coup against Arce earlier this year.

The incident raises concerns about security for Bolivia’s political leaders amid ongoing tensions within the Movement for Socialism party, founded by Morales.
