New Zealand’s firearms legislation is poised for a comprehensive overhaul, with discussions including the potential reintroduction of semi-automatic weapons at gun ranges.
This initiative comes as part of the coalition agreement between the National and ACT parties, aiming to reevaluate the Arms Act, which has been the foundation of the country’s gun laws since the 1980s.
Associate Justice Minister Nicole McKee, who has been a vocal critic of the stringent controls imposed following the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings, is leading the charge to revisit the legislation.
She told State media outlet RNZ the goal is to find a balance that ensures public safety while addressing concerns over the treatment of licensed firearms owners.
McKee said changes to firearms laws after the Mosque incident were hastily enacted and overly restrictive, and there needed to be dialogue that acknowledged gun ownership as part of New Zealand’s lifestyle, beyond the negative associations with crime.
‘Over 5000 people, deemed to have a proper purpose, already have a licence for centre-fire semi-automatic firearms. Under the rewrite of the Arms Act, a person would still need a legitimate reason to have a centre-fire semi-automatic firearm,’ McKee said.
‘Meanwhile, higher security and storage requirement would be required and large capacity magazines would continue to be unavailable to those without the proper, vetted endorsement.’
Opponents of the proposed measures argued New Zealand is ‘significantly safer’ with the ban. Aliya Danzeisen of the Islamic Women’s Council argues that New Zealand told RNZ firearms remain as dangerous as ever, and the community’s sense of safety has not improved since 2019. She said there was there were no ‘tangible benefits’ from reintroducing semi-automatics into New Zealand society.
A woman who grew up on a farm told RNZ, ‘people are responsible, usually. I feel like the mosque shooter was from Australia. He came here and took advantage of a loophole and I don’t think it’s fair that everyone in New Zealand has to pay for that.’

The Govt has no right to talk down to us about gun ownership when they refuse to have a public inquiry into the Police actions or inactions as to how Brendan Tarrant was allowed to obtain a gun licence and the red flags missed that could have prevented his [terrorist] attack.
