A man has been charged following a violent road rage incident in Onehunga that left a bus driver injured.
The incident occurred yesterday afternoon at approximately 2:20 p.m. near Onehunga Mall, when police were alerted to an assault on a bus driver.
According to Detective Senior Sergeant Martin Friend of Auckland City’s Crime Squad, the altercation escalated when the suspect allegedly threw a wrench through an open bus window, striking the driver in the head.
“The wrench went through an open bus window and hit the driver in the head, resulting in an injury above his eye,” said Friend.
The injured bus driver was taken to the hospital, where they received treatment before returning home to recover.
Following the attack, police launched an investigation to identify the suspect. Early this morning, a man was arrested at a Randwick Park address in connection with the incident.
Detective Senior Sergeant Friend acknowledged the distress such incidents cause in the community and assured the public that support is being provided to the victim.
“There is no place for this type of violence in our community,” Friend emphasized. “No one deserves to come to work and be subjected to this type of behaviour.”
The 30-year-old man is facing multiple charges, including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless driving, and driving while suspended. He is set to appear in Auckland District Court in the coming days.
