Gregory Simon, convicted of multiple violent offenses including rape, assault, and strangulation, caused a scene during his sentencing in the Hamilton District Court by telling Judge Arthur Tompkins to “go f*** yourself.”
Simon, who had a history of misconduct in prison, was agitated by discussions about his behaviour and lack of engagement with the Department of Corrections. According to legacy media, despite later apologising he chose to be sent back to the cells, saying he didn’t care what length of jail term he received. His offenses, committed in late 2021, involved a brutal attack on a woman in her emergency motel accommodation, where he repeatedly assaulted and threatened her.
During sentencing the Crown highlighted the severity of Simon’s crimes, noting the psychological and physical impact on the victim, and argued for a starting point of 13 to 14 years imprisonment. Simon’s counsel, James Olsen, disputed some aspects of the Crown’s submissions, including claims of premeditation.
Ultimately, Judge Tompkins sentenced Simon to 10 and a half years in jail, with a 40% minimum non-parole period. Simon’s extensive criminal history and high risk of reoffending were significant factors in the sentencing decision.
