Mike King in spotlight after comment on alcohol and mental health

The opposition is urging the government to reconsider its funding for the I Am Hope/Gumboot Friday initiative following remarks from mental health advocate Mike King, who suggested alcohol could serve as a “solution” rather than a problem for people with mental health issues.

In a radio interview with legacy media, King argued that alcohol had helped prevent suicides by offering relief for individuals struggling with mental health challenges, based on his own experience.

Labour’s mental health spokesperson, Ingrid Leary, criticised King’s statements as “deeply problematic,” arguing they contradicted extensive research linking alcohol use to increased suicide risk and mental health issues. Leary suggested that continued government support for Gumboot Friday could imply an endorsement of alcohol as a mental health coping strategy.

In response Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey acknowledged his respect for King’s work but disagreed with the comments, saying alcohol misuse poses significant community risks and reaffirming the government’s commitment to substance misuse interventions. King’s initiative, backed by a $24 million government fund over four years, provides free mental health support for young New Zealanders.
