The Ministry of Justice has confirmed it will cut 186 roles, with 59 new positions created, leading to a net reduction of 127 roles as part of a cost-cutting organisational realignment.
Announced by the secretary for justice, Andrew Kibblewhite, the restructure aims to make savings while ensuring the delivery of core justice services. In June the ministry initially proposed 178 job cuts, 67 of which were vacant, and the creation of 55 new roles.
The final plan now sees 89 currently vacant positions disestablished. The new structure, which comes into effect on October 1, follows a thorough feedback process involving over 1,400 staff responses.
Public Service Association (PSA) criticised the cuts, calling them “dangerous” and warning they would slow the wheels of justice.
PSA assistant secretary Fleur Fitzsimons told legacy media the reduction in roles contradicts the government’s law and order priorities, risking bottlenecks and less effective justice system operations.
