Health Minister Dr. Shane Reti has introduced a fast-track application pathway for overseas-trained specialist doctors in an effort to “improve healthcare access for New Zealanders”.
The Medical Council’s new process will allow eligible specialists in fields such as anaesthesia, dermatology, and emergency medicine from the UK, Ireland, and Australia to have their registration applications processed within 20 working days, a significant reduction from the usual six-month timeframe.
The initiative begins on 1 November and is being implemented addresses “critical staffing gaps” in the health sector while longer-term measures, such as increasing domestic medical school placements, are pursued, said Reti.
The expedited pathway is expected to attract more specialists from the UK and Ireland, helping to bridge current gaps and reduce wait times for patients.

What about reinstating all the doctors and nurses that were let go for refusing the jab.
Interesting limit of Specialities..but a good start and has been a long time coming.
How about more Immunologists, Cardiologists, Neurologists, Haematologists……and more Hospital bed capacity?
Hopefully these new Doctors will stay when they find themselves needing to work under Pharmac’s limitations to treatment options.
I’m a health professional (Dental) now living in Australia. Once again, Reti and the Government have it wrong. Approach NZ trained Drs and support staff by using these levels. Remove apartheid from the health care system, offer relocation expenses, pay better, remember 60k was recently spent on a social event, remove all stupid restrictions on freedom of speech)the Medical and Dental Councilsneed to shit their pie holes).
Nah, they’d prefer foreign doctors who will just say and do what they’re told, happy to just have a foot in the door in Godzone.
Also note that in current day, “FROM the UK” and “FROM Ireland” doesn’t necessarily mean British or Irish people.
Guaranteed there will be dishonesty and treachery afoot.
Houston, we have a problem. Our corporate state government created a problem, caused a reaction and is now attempting a solution to the problem?
Rinse, repeat.
In the mean time they are killing off Dunedin’s medical school by stealth going by the local news reports… Which is NOT the first time National wanted it gone!
