A critically injured man, described by witnesses as “completely drenched in blood,” was found with stab wounds on Auckland’s North Shore, prompting a lockdown at a nearby childcare centre.
The man was discovered on Birkenhead Avenue shortly after 2pm and was rushed to Auckland City Hospital in critical condition.
Armed police swiftly cordoned off the area as detectives launched an investigation, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Next Generation Birkenhead childcare centre, located near the scene, assured parents that children were safe and unaware of the situation, with police escorting caregivers for pickups.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with emergency responders working urgently and reports of a vehicle seen fleeing the area.
Authorities are now conducting a scene examination, and Auckland Transport has warned of road closures and diversions. Police have asked the public to provide any relevant information by contacting them on 105, quoting reference number P061509544.
