State-owned broadcaster TVNZ has reported a significant loss of $85 million for the full year, driven by a $62 million asset write-down and a $39 million drop in advertising revenue.
CEO Jodi O’Donnell cited a challenging economic environment and a tough advertising market as key factors in the loss.
The legacy media outlet is focusing on cost-cutting measures, aiming to save $30 million, while continuing to invest in its digital strategy and streaming platform.
The company will not pay a dividend but remains confident in its turnaround plan.

I know that Chris Faafoi was contacted by a friend of mine suggesting a complete overhaul of the TVNZ programming. Such an overhaul was suggested to included The History Channel, Eden, Maori Channel, TV1, 2 & 3, TLC, Rush, Discovery, Real History, BBC, and Channel 200 along with Al-Jazeera.
Glad that the over-reaching Shopping Channels have been replaced, but the Track 1 & 2 Channels encourage at-home gambling.
The Parliament Channel shows the dialogue that gets talked-around on the House Floor…
The Religious Channels should be reduced to one-channel only, allowing for more channel usage of other formats.
Strange how the Chinese channels do not offer English language translations on the screens…
We also need to see Russian programming as well, in order to get both sides of the story, in English and in translated captions.
Look for TV Reception Licences to make a return, and channels being abolished to that which only Jabby would approve of..!
What we need is no TVNZ, full stop.
No one I know watches free to air TV anymore as it’s Almost all Rubbish / propaganda and anything that is worth watching is so drowned in a sea of pointless commercials as to make it unwatchable. We should be watching any half way decent film / TV series/ documentary as God intended anyway on Physical Media. I cannot speak to TVNZ because I do not watch it anyway. I have noticed how the quality of programming on many channels has dropped significantly over the last few years.
For example, a decade ago (give or take) Discovery Channel used to be excellent. Now it’s all “Naked and Afraid”, “Demolition Down Under” and “Sewer Divers”. It’s appalling.
I mean really appalling. If I want to see naked people, I will see naked people that are not blurred out on the internet LOL. If I want to see buildings demolished, I will walk to a local building site and get out a small chair and popcorn, if I want to see the sewer, well, you can guess.
Some of the programming has got to the stage where they are not only dumbing us down but are really “taking the piss”. They are like asking us rhetorically, “How bad do we have to make it before you stop watching?”
