A fire that destroyed an abandoned building at the former Queen Mary Hospital site in Hanmer Springs early Saturday morning is being treated as suspicious.
Emergency services responded to the blaze at 3:47am, with volunteer brigades from Hanmer Springs and Culverden working for four hours to extinguish the fire.
While the building was not part of the hospital’s main infrastructure, concerns have been raised about future risks.
The site, over 100 years old, holds significant historical value and is undergoing redevelopment by the Hurunui District Council.
