The Vatican has removed the authority of the Christchurch-based Catholic order, the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer, following an investigation into unauthorised exorcisms and allegations of spiritual and psychological abuse.
The order, also known as the Transalpine Redemptorists, or simply ‘The Sons’, had previously been authorised to preach the Traditional Latin Mass in Christchurch.
The investigation, initiated by a TV3 investigation, uncovered disturbing practices including tying individuals up during exorcisms, forcing penance rituals, and influencing young followers with extreme beliefs.
As a result, all priests from the order have been stripped of their religious faculties and banned from practicing in the Christchurch diocese.
Key figures in the order, Fathers Michael Mary and Anthony Mary, face allegations of manipulation, control, and unauthorised exorcisms, including on young children.
Despite their denial of any wrongdoing, 17 individuals raised serious concerns during the Vatican’s investigation, which was led by Australian Bishop Robert McGuckin. The Bishop of Christchurch, Michael Gielen told legacy media he has accepted the Vatican’s recommendations, removing the order’s faculties and instructing all professed members to leave the diocese.

And you say they can’t “preach” the Traditional Latin Mass. What on earth do you mean by that?
The Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer have denied that they undertook exorcisms without permission and the Bishop of Christchurch confirmed they were given permission for two exorcisms. The Sons have now started a canonical appeal against Biship Gielen’s decision. He has not even given them a right of reply. Some of the complainants are known to have mental problems and have been trying to close down the chaplaincy for years. This group of priests stood up against the vaccine and joined the march in Wellington.
