A state of emergency has been declared in parts of Wellington as residents along the city’s southern coastline are urged to leave vulnerable waterfront properties before dangerous 8-metre swells strike today.
Civil Defence has ordered evacuations in Ōwhiro Bay, Island Bay, Houghton Bay and Breaker Bay by 9am, warning conditions could become too hazardous for people to leave afterwards.
Authorities expect large waves, coastal flooding, debris on roads and transport disruptions, particularly around high tide.
Ferry services have already been cancelled, while road closures and public transport delays are likely.
Residents have been advised to take essential belongings, medications and pets, check on neighbours who may need help, and seek shelter with family, friends or at a designated evacuation centre in Island Bay.
