Bill Cosby accused of rape in new sexual assault lawsuit

A new sexual assault lawsuit has been filed against comedian Bill Cosby following his release from prison this year, after his conviction on three counts of aggravated indecent assault was overturned.

Actress Lili Bernard, one of dozens of women to have accused Cosby of sexual assault, filed a lawsuit against the disgraced comedian and television star on Thursday, approximately three months after he was released from prison.

Bernard, 57, alleges in her suit that Cosby drugged and raped her in an Atlantic City, New Jersey hotel in 1990 when she was 26. She claims to have met Cosby on the set of ‘The Cosby Show’ and he offered to be an acting mentor to her, even warning her about the “sexual pressures of Hollywood.”

Bill Cosby facing new sexual assault lawsuit news

Cosby “violently and without permission” grabbed her on one occasion in July of 1990, she alleges in the suit, and then drugged and raped her the following month during a trip he said was intended for her to meet with a producer to advance her career. Benard is seeking $125 million in damages.

Cosby was previously sentenced to three to 10 years in prison after being convicted on three counts of aggravated indecent assault in the fall of 2018. In June of this year, however, the 84-year-old’s conviction was overturned by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, citing a previous prosecutorial agreement that had been ignored.

Revelations about Cosby were especially scandalous for the public, as the comedian had once widely been referred to as ‘America’s Dad’, building his brand of humor on family-friendly comedy. Since then, rumors have swirled that Cosby could be attempting to put the host of controversies behind him and return to the road as a stand-up comedian.

Bernard told the Associated Press that Cosby’s release “retraumatized” and “terrified” her.

“I was really horrified for any woman or girl that would come into contact with him,” she said, adding that the Pennsylvania Supreme Court “let a predator back on the streets.”

Cosby has continually denied all allegations of wrongdoing against him and maintained his innocence while facing conviction, despite the growing number of women publicly accusing him. He has similarly waved off the new lawsuit through a spokesperson, calling it “another attempt to abuse the legal process.”

“Mr. Cosby continues to maintain steadfast in his innocence and will vigorously fight ANY alleged allegations waged against him and is willing and able to take this fight to the highest court in these United States of America,” Cosby spokesperson Andrew Wyatt said.

Caroline Bilkey is a career diplomat who has held the position of Assistant Secretary and Director of the MFAT Auckland office since 2018. She has served as New Zealand’s Ambassador to Brazil and Suriname and New Zealand High Commissioner to Samoa. Ms Bilkey was also the Director Congressional Affairs at New Zealand Embassy, Washington, and her Wellington-based leadership positions include Chief of Protocol, Special Representative for the Pacific Islands Forum, and Deputy Director of the Legal Division.

As Permanent Representative to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Ms Bilkey will support New Zealand’s focus on economic recovery post-COVID, as well as key policy challenges such as the intergration of well-being and inclusivity considerations into the work of the OECD, and efforts to tax the digital economy.

“We know that sustaining our diplomatic networks are more important than ever as we collectively combat COVID-19. Ms Bilkey’s appointment will further strengthen our relationships with global partners at this crucial time and into the future,” Nanaia Mahuta said.

Ms Bilkey will also be accredited to Monaco, Portugal, and Senegal.

Traffic light system proposal to replace COVID alert levels

0

A proposal to change the alert level system in New Zealand is to be discussed at a meeting of Cabinet on Monday.

The new system is based on the colours of the traffic light, with green roughly equating to level 1, amber to level 2, and red to level 2.5.

Levels 3 and 4 would remain in place as is.

It is difficult to understand the logic in this, other than being a re-branding exercise to keep an increasingly disinterested public engaged in the COVID narrative.

Black hobbits, female heroes and other races in Amazon’s new ‘Lord of the Rings’ series draw mixed reactions

Amazon’s upcoming ‘Lord of the Rings’ series has drawn criticism for “preachy multiculturalism” after it emerged that the show will feature a diverse cast with a “tribe” of multi-racial hobbits and a “very strong female presence”.

Earlier in the week, British actor Lenny Henry revealed that he would be playing a “black hobbit” from an “indigenous” tribe called the Harfoots – a variety of hobbit described by Lord of the Rings (LOTR) author J.R.R. Tolkien as having darker skin.

Describing the series as a “prequel to the age” seen in the LOTR books and films, Henry told the BBC that the show was about the “early days of the Shire and of Tolkien’s environment”. In Tolkien’s fantasy world of Middle-Earth, the Shire is the green grassland home country of the hobbit people.

“So we’re an indigenous population of Harfoots. We’re hobbits, but we’re called Harfoots. And we’re multicultural. We’re a tribe. We’re not a race,” said Henry, who added that the Harfoots were made up of a number of different ethnicities.

So there are black and Asian and brown and even Maori-types within it. It’s a whole brand-new set of adventures that seeds some of the origins of different characters.

Noting that it would take “at least 10 years to tell the story”, the 63-year-old actor said the series would be based on The Silmarillion – a collection of Tolkien’s works on Middle-Earth history and mythology that Henry described as “almost like a cheat sheet for what happens next in this world.”

Adding that the show’s writers had a “lot of fun in extrapolating it all out”, Henry also revealed that the series will feature a “very strong female presence” with “female heroes in this evocation of the story”.

Amazon had paid $250 million to secure the television rights to the franchise four years ago after founder Jeff Bezos demanded a ‘Game of Thrones’-style program to boost his company’s streaming service. The retail giant is reportedly spending $465 million for the first season of the show, which is scheduled to premiere next September.

In a May interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios boss Jennifer Salke said the huge budget reflected the need to “really [build] the infrastructure of what will sustain” a “huge world-building show”. She also expressed confidence that a “giant, global audience” will “show up to [watch] it as appointment television.”

However, the majority of social media users reacted to news about the diverse cast by denouncing Amazon for “preachy multiculturalism” and making a “mockery of Tolkien’s work and vision”. Several commenters stated that they would not be watching the show, which one person predicted would be “woke garbage, created with a strict ideological agenda and zero respect to actual story.”

“Did these idiots even read the books? Heck, watch the movies?” asked one person, while others drew unfavorable comparisons between the series and the Peter Jackson-directed LOTR trilogy by noting that “nothing will ever replace come close [to] the size and scope” of the early-2000s movies.

However, other users countered that the series was a “fantasy TV show” that was based on a “mythical storyline” – reasoning that it was “not out of place” to have “different races” in it. A number of people said the show creators had “modern audiences” and “contemporary values” in mind – with one person saying it “would be awkward” if a TV show made in 2021 featured an “all white” cast.

Serial arsonist and rapist finally named

0

The man responsible for a series of arson attacks in the South Auckland region during 2018 can now be named as Dylan Hart-Dehar.

Hart-Dehar was convicted of the arsons more than two years ago, but his named remained a secret until yesterday due to ongoing suppression applications brought initially by the New Zealand Fire Service, and his mother. Those applications were no longer being pursued. At the time he also faced charges of rape in relation to a 15 year old girl.

Hart-Dehar was sentenced to six years and three months imprisonment for the arson attacks and related crimes.

He was sentenced in April this year on the sexual violation charges to cumulative prison sentences.

No crime for guy: ‘James Bond’ star Daniel Craig reveals he visits gay bars

The actor who famously portrayed Agent 007 has said this week that he prefers to visit gay clubs over heterosexual venues because he’s less likely to run into people looking to fight.

During a Tuesday appearance on SiriusXM’s Lunch with Bruce podcast, Craig told host Bruce Bozzi – who is gay – that he’s “been going to gay bars for as long as I can remember.”

Craig explained that one of the reasons he prefers visiting gay bars is because of “the aggressive d**k swinging in hetero bars” which caused him to “get into fights” more often.

The actor added that he “just got very sick” of the vibe in straight venues, whereas in gay bars “everybody was chill” and it was “a very safe place to be.”

“I could meet girls there, cause there are a lot of girls there for exactly the same reason I was there,” Craig said.

Despite having been married to actress Rachel Weisz since 2011, Craig’s sexuality was questioned in 2019 after his ‘No Time to Die’ co-star Rami Malek revealed that the two had kissed during production.

Malek told Stephen Colbert that after the two actors had finally perfected a scene, Craig picked him up and “a kiss transpired between the two of us.”

Though he stressed that he couldn’t exactly “tell who initiated” the incident, Malek said, “I’m going to say that Daniel initiated it. And I was very taken aback.”

Craig’s appearance in ‘No Time to Die’ is allegedly the last time he will play James Bond. After multiple delays due to Covid-19 pandemic, the film was finally released in theatres this month.

A Conservative MP in the UK has died after being stabbed “several times” as he held a meeting at a Methodist church in his constituency of Southend West. Police have been deployed to the area in considerable numbers.

On Friday, a man ran into the Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, where Conservative MP Sir David Amess was holding his constituency surgery. The man proceeded to attack the MP, who was stabbed “several times.”

Essex Police confirmed shortly after 3pm that Amess had sadly died from his wounds. He had been receiving treatment at the church where he was attacked three hours earlier.

The location has been closed off and police have been seen in considerable force in the area. A police helicopter was also deployed.

Essex Police stated a man had been arrested in relation to the stabbing. “We were called to reports of a stabbing in Eastwood Rd North shortly after 12.05pm. A man was arrested shortly after & we’re not looking for anyone else.”

The MP had tweeted on Tuesday that he would be present at the Belfairs Methodist Church for his surgery on Friday. MPs tend to hold their constituency meetings on Fridays, as work often brings them to their Westminster office from Monday through to Thursday.

“Appalled to hear of the attack on [David Amess] today. I know him well and am thinking of him with very best wishes as we await further news,” opposition lawmaker Stephen Timms wrote on Twitter. Timms himself was stabbed during a constituency meeting in 2010.

Amess, a prominent Tory MP, has served as the member for Southend West since 1997. He had previously served as MP for Basildon.
