Renowned Kiwi sailor Matt Mitchell, a three-time America’s Cup champion with Team New Zealand, Alinghi, and Oracle, has died at the age of 53 after a battle with cancer.
Mitchell, who passed away in Auckland last week, was celebrated for his determination and natural talent on the water, participating in six America’s Cup regattas and earning victory with Team New Zealand in 2000, Alinghi in 2007, and Oracle in 2013—most notably during Oracle’s historic comeback from 8-1 behind to triumph 9-8 against Team NZ.
A funeral service for him will be held at the Royal Akarana Yacht Club on Tuesday afternoon.
