South Africa secured the 2024 Rugby Championship title with a dominant 48-7 victory over Argentina at Mbombela Stadium.
Fullback Aphelele Fassi and flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit each scored two tries, with additional tries from Cheslin Kolbe, Malcolm Marx, and Jesse Kriel.
The Springboks dominated Argentina in both the scrum and backline play, overwhelming their opponents, who struggled with discipline and suffered multiple yellow cards and a red card for flanker Pablo Matera. Argentina’s sole try came from flyhalf Tomas Albornoz, but they were unable to mount a significant challenge against the rampant South Africans.
The win also marked a milestone for South Africa as lock Eben Etzebeth became the most capped Springbok with his 128th appearance, surpassing Victor Matfield. The Springboks’ attacking game, led by flyhalf Manie Libbok, delivered seven tries, with the team capitalizing on Argentina’s mistakes.
The victory gave South Africa their first Southern Hemisphere title since 2019 and their fifth overall, finishing the championship with 24 points, well ahead of second-placed New Zealand.
