Texas Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Dallas, has faced backlash following her recent derogatory remarks about Governor Greg Abbott’s use of a wheelchair.
During a speech at a “Human Rights Campaign” event in Los Angeles this week Crockett referred to Abbott as “Governor Hot Wheels,” eliciting laughter and applause from the audience. She further criticised Abbott, stating, “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-ass mess, honey.”
Governor Abbott, who has been paralysed from the waist down since a 1984 accident, has served as Texas’s governor since 2014.
The comments from Crockett and her mocking tone have been slammed, with condemnation coming from even members of her own party.
Disability rights advocates expressed disappointment, emphasising that such remarks perpetuate stigma and exclusion for individuals with disabilities. The incident undermined efforts toward inclusivity for those who suffer from disabilities.
Republican leaders were swift and unequivocal in their criticism.
Senator John Cornyn labeled the remarks as “shameful,” while Attorney General Ken Paxton described Crockett as “despicable.”
Representative Randy Weber announced plans to introduce a resolution to censure Crockett for her comments.
In response to the mounting backlash, Crockett attempted “to clarify” her statements.
The attorney said her remarks were not intended to mock Abbott’s disability but were aimed at criticising his policies, particularly his approach to migrant transportation. Crockett stated,
“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable.”
Despite her clarification, many remain unconvinced, viewing her comments as insensitive and inappropriate. Critics argue that elected officials should maintain a level of decorum and respect, especially concerning personal attributes such as disabilities. The incident has ignited a broader conversation about the standards of political discourse and the importance of respectful dialogue.
As the controversy continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this will impact Crockett’s political career and whether further actions, such as formal censure, will be pursued.
It’s not remarkable that a trashy ghetto dimwit like Jasmine Crockett would make fun of disabled people. What’s revealing is that the crowd at the “Human Rights Campaign” loudly applauded. Everything you need to know about leftist “human rights” groups.
