Putin suggests Saudi Arabia as potential venue for Ukraine peace talks

Putin Saudi Arabia news

Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested that Saudi Arabia would be a suitable location for a potential peace summit aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine.

During a press conference on Friday, Putin said he appreciated Saudi Arabia’s mediation efforts, calling the country “friendly” and praising its leadership for sincere attempts to foster peace.

Responding to a Saudi journalist’s inquiry about whether Russia would attend such a summit, Putin affirmed that Saudi Arabia would be a “comfortable” venue for negotiations.

However, Putin stressed that any resolution should be based on the draft treaty discussed during the 2022 negotiations in Istanbul, which had proposed Ukraine’s neutrality and limitations on its military.

According to Putin, Ukraine initially agreed to these terms but later walked away from the talks.

Ukrainian officials, supported by Western leaders, rejected Moscow’s conditions, with former U.S. official Victoria Nuland later confirming that Washington did not see the deal as favourable for Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has since maintained that peace can only be achieved on Kyiv’s terms, including the restoration of Ukraine’s 1991 borders, a stance Moscow finds unacceptable.
