Incoming Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Brendan Carr, appointed by President Trump, has pledged to prioritise combating the “censorship cartel” among Big Tech companies.
Speaking on Fox News, Carr said there was a need to restore free speech in America, criticising platforms like Facebook and the old Twitter for working with advertisers and government officials to censor dissenting opinions.
He stated that stifling speech also stifles innovation, framing the effort as essential for revitalising American prosperity under Trump’s leadership. Carr vowed to dismantle the censorship practices.
The controversy over Big Tech censorship has gained traction in recent years, with incidents such as the suppression of the Hunter Biden laptop story and COVID-19 “misinformation” policies drawing widespread criticism.
Notably, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted to yielding to pressure from the Biden administration to censor content, a decision he has since expressed regret over.
Carr’s appointment as FCC chair has been celebrated by Trump, who hailed him as a “warrior for free speech” poised to lead the charge against regulatory barriers and bolster economic growth.
