Youths arrested following spate of Northland car thefts

A Kamo resident with an eye for detail has assisted Police in two arrests, following a spate of vehicle thefts in the area.

Whangārei Area Prevention Manager, Senior Sergeant Christian Stainton, says a resident on Balmacewan Drive noticed two youths allegedly attempting to steal a parked car at around 1pm yesterday.

“Police have arrived quickly and the youths have attempted to evade capture by fleeing on foot.

“Following a short foot chase, two youths were located in nearby grassland.”

Senior Sergeant Stainton says it’s a timely reminder that Police cannot prevent crime alone and rely on the help of the community to stop this type of illegal activity.

“This is a great example of if you see something, say something,” he says.

“Additionally, this quick action shows how important it is for the public to report crime as soon as possible to allow Police to attend – it could be the difference between an arrest on the day or not.

“We need the public to report any suspicious activity so we can conduct enquiries and hold offenders to account.”

Anyone who sees any suspicious behaviour that is happening now is urged to contact Police on 111, or 105 if it is after the fact.

A 14-year-old and 15-year-old have been referred to Youth Aid Services.
