Three schoolboys, aged 15 to 16, from Māngere College have been charged with assault following a brutal attack on a teen from Marcellin College.
The incident occurred on February 12 when the victim was targeted by a group of 10-15 teenagers as he disembarked a bus in Māngere. The attack, which took place in a McDonald’s car park on Bader Drive and was egged on by an another 30 onlookers.
The victim was hospitalised with severe injuries, including being struck in the head with a bottle.
Bystanders intervened, providing first aid and transporting the victim to the hospital. In response to the attack, which police are actively investigating, both schools and community leaders have called for calm and an end to the rivalry.
Measures including police patrols, temporary changes to bus routes, and community meetings have been implemented to ensure student safety and foster dialogue among those involved.
Police said the three boys charged had been referred to Youth Aid and would be held to account for the assault.
‘We have no tolerance for violence, especially in public spaces and those identified committing offending will be held accountable,’ police said in a statement.
