Pukaki crash news

Reports emerging from Malaysia confirm that two Malaysian students tragically lost their lives in a devastating crash that occurred in Canterbury yesterday.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his condolences to the families of the deceased students via social media.

The victims, identified as Megat Ashman Aqif Megat Irman Jefni and Wan Nur Adlina Alisa, were enrolled at the University of Canterbury. They were among five Malaysian students involved in the fatal accident on State Highway 8 in Pūkaki near Lake Tekapo, which also claimed the lives of two others traveling in a separate vehicle and a motorcyclist.

The crash, which unfolded between Hayman Road and Tekapo Canal Road, sent shockwaves through the Malaysian community. Maisarah Mahmud, a prominent skincare YouTuber, revealed that one of her siblings was part of the convoy involved in the tragic incident, expressing gratitude for her sister’s safety while mourning the loss of her brother’s friend.

In response to the tragedy, the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Malaysian high commission in Wellington is offering consular assistance to the victims and their families. The ministry assured the bereaved families support, including assistance with repatriation.

Meanwhile, the injured students have been airlifted to Christchurch Hospital for urgent medical attention.

  1. 😢 what a sad loss and utter tragedy. So young. My love to their families. When you send your precious child out in the world after years of love and nurturing this is the last thing you expect. I am so sorry for your loss.
