A major police operation unfolded in central Melbourne on Wednesday, involving the arson and explosives squad on Collins Street.
The incident began around midday, leading to the closure of Collins Street between Queen and Elizabeth Streets. Multiple police vehicles and the bomb squad were present, causing several businesses to shut down and trams to halt service.
Despite initial fears of a possible bank robbery, police ruled out any terror-related motives.
A 33-year-old man was arrested and is being interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation. The Bomb Response Unit conducted a safety check on a suspicious white VW hatchback, discovering items like a can of petrol and black knuckle dusters.
The area was blocked off for about an hour, causing significant disruption.
Video footage on social media showed police vehicles cordoning off the street and conducting searches. By 1:30 PM, the situation was under control, and the street was reopened, allowing workers to return to their buildings.
Police have assured the public that there is no immediate threat to community safety and further updates will be provided when appropriate.
