Greens co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick has indicated openness to using the waka-jumping legislation to remove Darleen Tana from Parliament after Tana’s resignation from the Green Party.
Tana, implicated in exploitation allegations linked to her husband’s bicycle company, has not resigned from her parliamentary position, prompting the Greens to consider using a law they ‘ideologically’ oppose.
Swarbrick told state media it was necessary to have sensitive and informed discussions within the party before making any decisions. She acknowledged the legislation was a potential last resort if Tana refused to step down. The party is scheduled to hold its annual general meeting in Christchurch, where this issue will be a key topic of discussion.
Swarbrick was hopeful Tana would voluntarily resign and denied the embattled MP’s claims of misrepresentation in the party’s report, which had led to the calls for resignation.
Acting Prime Minister Winston Peters also called for Tana’s departure, citing her disruption of Parliament’s proportionality and taxpayer expenses during her suspension. The Greens have faced not released the full report, which has cost $43,000, citing privacy concerns.
