The government has stepped in with an additional $50,000 of financial support for farmers and growers in Southland and parts of Otago, as relentless spring weather has led to a medium-scale “adverse event classification”.
Agriculture Minister Todd McClay and Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson announced the extra assistance following heavy rainfall that has worsened already difficult conditions.
“The relentless wet weather has been tough on farmers and animals across Southland and Otago in what has already been a challenging year,” Minister McClay said. “Over the past 24 hours, torrential rain has caused further flooding, with some areas in Southland receiving more than 200% of the average September rainfall.”
The support package is aimed at helping the affected rural communities through this tough period. The government is partnering with sector groups and local Rural Support Trusts to roll out the necessary assistance. This includes the appointment of a local coordinator to organise recovery and wellbeing events, as well as providing access to specialized advice and support.
“The prolonged effects of this wet and cold weather take a toll on our hard-working rural communities. I encourage people to check in with their family, neighbors, and staff, and to ask for help if you or someone you know needs it,” said McClay.
The medium-scale adverse event designation covers the entire Southland region and the Clutha District in Otago, although the government continues to closely monitor other affected areas.
Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson highlighted that this additional funding comes on top of the $250,000 allocated in June to support the Rural Support Trusts. “This funding gives the Rural Support Trusts the confidence to respond swiftly to situations like those we’re seeing in the lower South Island,” Patterson said.
