A toddler aged three or four was suspended from a state nursery in the 2022–23 academic year for “abuse against sexual orientation and gender identity,” according to Department for Education data, igniting fierce debate over the application of gender policies to very young children.
The incident, first reported by The Telegraph (UK) last week (paywalled) is part of a broader rise in school exclusions for “transphobic” or homophobic behaviour”, which saw 178 suspensions or expulsions in primary schools last year, including 13 involving children aged four or five.
Critics, including advocacy group Sex Matters and the Free Speech Union (UK), condemned the trend as an overreach of ideology onto toddlers, while the Department for Education defended its commitment to safety and discipline in schools.
Sex Matters Director of Advocacy Helen Joyce told the Telegraph, “Teachers and school leaders involved in this insanity should be ashamed of themselves for projecting adult concepts and beliefs onto such young children.
“It’s unforgivable for children’s vital early education to be so traumatically disrupted by school leaders who prioritise activists’ demands over their charges’ wellbeing.”
