Croatian President Zoran Milanovic has refused to send troops to a NATO command tasked with coordinating military aid to Ukraine, asserting that doing so would draw Croatia into a direct conflict with Russia.
Despite Croatia’s right-wing government already sending weapons and helicopters to Ukraine, Milanovic, a Social Democrat, has consistently opposed deeper involvement.
“I will not allow Croatian soldiers, officers, or NCOs to participate in activities that would pull Croatia into war,” Milanovic declared on Thursday, rejecting the deployment of personnel to NATO’s Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) command in Germany.
Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic criticised Milanovic’s stance, accusing him of isolating Croatia internationally.
Despite NATO’s assurance that the mission would not involve sending troops to Ukraine, Milanovic maintains that even minimal involvement would violate Croatian national interests.
He stressed Croatia’s commitment to its allies by bolstering its NATO border force but vowed not to further entangle the nation in the conflict.
