A violent clash erupted at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Cherkasy, Ukraine, as men in military-style clothing attempted to seize the building from Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) worshippers during a night service.
Around 100 masked men, wearing khaki clothing with no official insignia, raided the church, ejecting those inside.
Videos circulating online show UOC supporters fighting back, with tensions escalating as a handgun was brandished and projectiles, including a bench, were thrown at the attackers.
The assailants eventually retreated, but the situation remains tense as reports suggest that radical Ukrainian ne-Nazi nationalists are gathering for another confrontation.
The incident is part of a broader struggle between the UOC and the Kiev-backed Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU).
The Ukrainian government has accused the UOC of ties to Russia, leading to years of persecution, property seizures, and threats to outlaw the denomination.
Ukrainian officials have described the raid as the “transfer” of the cathedral to the OCU, while UOC supporters, including Metropolitan Theodosius, condemned the takeover as illegal and a violation of their rights.
Theodosius, under house arrest since April 2023 for alleged religious discrimination, defied the order to lead his parishioners in defending the church.
