Five dead after Amazon cargo jet crashes off Miami Airport runway (Video)

Five people have died and several others were injured after a Boeing 767 cargo aircraft overran a runway at Miami International Airport, crossed a public road and struck vehicles before catching fire.

The Federal Aviation Administration identified the aircraft as a Boeing 767 operated by 21 Air on behalf of Amazon. The plane had flown from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and arrived in Miami at about 2pm on Sunday.

The accident triggered a full ground stop at the airport as emergency crews responded to the scene. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said firefighters encountered an aircraft engulfed in heavy flames and smoke and began extinguishing the blaze while assessing those injured.

Footage shared online appeared to show the cargo jet continuing beyond the runway, crossing a nearby road and eventually stopping close to a parking area. Separate video showed intense flames around the aircraft’s right side and a large column of black smoke, with its right wing appearing badly damaged.

NBC Miami, citing a source, reported that both pilots were transported to Jackson South Medical Center. Three other people were reportedly taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, although their conditions were not immediately disclosed.

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said the company was working closely with authorities to establish exactly what had happened.

Airport operations gradually resumed later in the afternoon, with one of Miami International Airport’s four runways reopening at approximately 4.15pm and another reopening around 30 minutes later. Travellers were warned that disruptions were expected to continue.

The National Transportation Safety Board is deploying investigators to Miami to lead the inquiry into the crash, while the FAA is also investigating.
