Waitākere Hospital staff stage walkout over patient’s racial abuse

More than 30 staff members at Waitākere Hospital took the extraordinary step of signing a cease-work order after enduring six weeks of racial abuse from a patient.

The patient, who demanded care from white-only nurses and made sexually suggestive remarks, targeted Pacific Island and Filipino staff.

Despite incident reports and minimal action from management, staff were advised by a union delegate to cease work, which finally prompted hospital leaders to intervene.

The patient was warned that his behaviour could result in discharge or referral to police, which brought an end to the abuse.

The incident has drawn attention to the need for national guidelines to address racial discrimination against healthcare workers.

The case follows a similar situation at North Shore Hospital, where a patient’s racially discriminatory request was accommodated, causing outrage among workers.

Health leaders and unions argue that Health NZ’s protocols are insufficient in preventing such incidents and call for clearer national policies.

  1. This is totally unacceptable. The response is entirely appropriate. Now that said, lets hope it doesn’t get weaponised by government as a justification for more work tyranny…..

    • “Hi, I’m from the government and I’m here to help…”

“…make everything WORSE and monetise the problem.”

  2. Not their job to police opinions or language. it’s their job to provide medical care. If some one says something you don’t like you need to grow a pair. Better they be an A’hole with their words rather than their fists. Their words only have the power you allow them to have. Be an adult for once.

    • It is not their job to accept abuse from anyone in any form, very doubtful you would either from the tone of your comment.
I don’t think you can be more of an adult than accepting a job in the nursing profession!

  3. Isn’t that request by that patient, right or wrong can be debated, isn’t that exactly the same racial BS why we had name changes for all govt agencies, road signs, phone greetings, place names and forms to fill out?
Isn’t that why we have schools (and judges supporting that racial BS) teaching offspring ideologist’s crap instead of teaching kids so that they can thrive?
Isn’t that why we have different court systems?
Isn’t that why we have the little elite THEY have installed and allowed to florish (just to have a helper-guard within THEIR system) of race functionaries?
And if you thought I am talking about Maori only, you are wrong.
    You just haven’t paid attention.
