Prebble appointment to Waitangi Tribunal praised

Richard Prebble news

Former ACT leader and Labour minister Richard Prebble has been appointed to the Waitangi Tribunal, a move that has sparked criticism from far left radicals in the Labour Party but garnered praise for his extensive legal experience and contributions to Māori communities.

Māori Development Minister Tama Potaka highlighted Prebble’s long history of pro bono work for Māori trusts, hapū, and iwi, asserting that his knowledge of te ao Māori and legal expertise make him well-suited for the role.

ACT leader David Seymour echoed these sentiments, stating that Prebble’s qualifications and dedication to the Treaty of Waitangi make him an ideal candidate. Seymour also pointed out that similar appointments of former MPs were common under previous Labour governments, suggesting the criticism lacks merit.

Despite opposition from Labour’s far left Māori Development spokesperson Willie Jackson, who described the appointment as a “kick in the guts” for Māori, Prebble’s supporters maintain that his skills and experience will contribute significantly to the Tribunal’s work. Minister Potaka emphasised the importance of having diverse and talented individuals on the Waitangi Tribunal, ensuring balanced and effective public service delivery.

Prebble joins two other new appointments – Ken Williamson and Kevin Prime.

An ex MP from the fourth labour government who did more damage than any other government in creating division and apartheid with its made up treaty “Principles and Partnership” fallacies and other apartheid Acts and statutes.
