Washington Post ends presidential endorsements due to ‘public trust concerns’ – Bezos

Washington Post news

Jeff Bezos, owner of The Washington Post announced in an op-ed that the newspaper will no longer endorse presidential candidates, ending a tradition dating back to 1976.

Bezos attributed the decision to public trust concerns, noting that nearly 70% of Americans view the media as biased, citing a Gallup poll.

He argued that presidential endorsements reinforce perceptions of bias and lack of independence, which he believes undermines the paper’s credibility.

The shift comes amid staff backlash, with some resignations and a drafted endorsement for Vice President Kamala Harris ultimately shelved by management.

Bezos said the decision was not influenced by recent political interactions, such as last week’s meeting between former President Trump and Blue Origin executives.

The change has been divisive inside WaPo with 21 opinion columnists calling it a “terrible mistake,” stating that this is not the right time to abandon endorsements, given threats they see to “press freedom” and constitutional values.

More than 200,000 digital subscribers dropping their subscriptions by midday on Monday.

The move reflects a trend, as the Los Angeles Times also recently announced it would forgo presidential endorsements.

  1. They know it’s going to be a lot harder to rig this time around, so they’re trying to keep their noses clean in case he actually wins.

Never forget that Bezos was a politically connected Wall Street snake who left high finance to start an “online book shop” that just so happened to balloon into one of the biggest companies in history while the US government coincidentally crushed all his competition along the way.
