Latvian journalist Yury Alekseev has fled to Belarus, announcing his intention to seek political asylum, citing persecution over his pro-Russian views.
According to media outlet Delfi, Alekseev departed Latvia days before a court appearance, travelling through Lithuania to reach Minsk.
He posted about the journey on Facebook, saying he was relieved to have crossed the border but describing it as a nerve-wracking experience. Alekseev and his supporters claim his prosecution is politically motivated, tied to his stance on Russia-related issues.
In Latvia, Alekseev, 66, faces serious charges, including inciting ethnic hatred, illegal possession of ammunition, and distributing materials containing child pornography, which he insists are fabricated.
He was previously detained in 2017 following alleged inflammatory comments published in his work and has since appealed a two-year prison sentence handed down by a Riga court.
Lativa is just a backward US satellite state…..formerly a backward USSR satellite state…some things never change, eh?
What HAS changed is the tide of political refugees now headign TO the Eastern Blok rather than AWAY from it. Used to be only spies that ran away to the east, now it is journalists and other who embarrass the west. Shows how much more corrupt the west has been
