Latvian journalist Yury Alekseev has fled to Belarus, announcing his intention to seek political asylum, citing persecution over his pro-Russian views.

According to media outlet Delfi, Alekseev departed Latvia days before a court appearance, travelling through Lithuania to reach Minsk.

He posted about the journey on Facebook, saying he was relieved to have crossed the border but describing it as a nerve-wracking experience. Alekseev and his supporters claim his prosecution is politically motivated, tied to his stance on Russia-related issues.

In Latvia, Alekseev, 66, faces serious charges, including inciting ethnic hatred, illegal possession of ammunition, and distributing materials containing child pornography, which he insists are fabricated.

He was previously detained in 2017 following alleged inflammatory comments published in his work and has since appealed a two-year prison sentence handed down by a Riga court.
