Clashes have broken out in Amsterdam between Israeli football fans and pro-Palestinian protesters following a Europa League football match, despite a demonstration ban imposed by Mayor Femke Halsema.

Dutch police detained 57 people as disturbances unfolded overnight across the city centre, with social media videos showing chaotic scenes of people fleeing and violent altercations.

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof condemned the violence, calling for prosecutions and expressing his support for Israeli citizens targeted in the unrest.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered two planes to Amsterdam to bring citizens back to Israel, and the Israeli government urged those still in the city to stay indoors.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar contacted Dutch authorities to ensure safe transit for Israeli nationals, as additional Israeli rescue teams prepared to deploy.
