A collision involving a tourist-filled mini-bus, a Mazda ute, and a sedan on State Highway 1 north of Tīrau claimed one life and left 13 others injured, including two in critical condition and four in serious condition.
Emergency services, including five helicopters and multiple ambulances, rushed to the scene around 2 p.m.
The crash occurred on a stretch of highway near Paparamu Rd.
Debris scattered the area as responders transported victims to hospitals across Waikato, Rotorua, Tauranga, and Auckland.
There were 11 tourists in total and their nationalities remain unconfirmed. A scene investigation is underway, with police employing drones to assess the wreckage.
The stretch of road between Tīrau and the Piarere roundabout remains closed, causing significant disruption. The Serious Crash Unit is investigating to determine the cause of the accident.
