Allexis Ferrell, 27, of Ohio, has been sentenced to one year in jail for killing and eating a cat in a case that has drawn national outrage in the US.
Stark County Judge Frank Forchione condemned Ferrell’s actions as “repulsive” and a danger to the community, likening the mistreatment of the animal to harming a child.
The shocking incident, captured on police bodycam footage in August, showed Ferrell on all fours eating the cat as horrified neighbours looked on. Pleading guilty to felony animal cruelty, Ferrell was further criticized in court for embarrassing her community and the nation.
The sentence will run alongside an 18-month term Ferrell is already serving for prior convictions, including theft and child endangerment.
Stark County prosecutor Chelsea Small called the cat-eating incident one of the most disturbing cases of her career.
Ferrell’s defense attorney cited her struggles with substance abuse and announced plans for her to undergo inpatient treatment after her release.
