One New Zealand Warriors captain Tohu Harris has announced his immediate retirement from rugby league due to ongoing complications from offseason wrist surgery.
The 234-game veteran, set to begin his 13th NRL season, told the warriors.kiwi website that he was devastated at having to step away, stating that despite feeling physically strong in training, the pain from his injury has made it impossible to perform at his best.
Harris, who played 117 games for the Warriors and previously 117 for Melbourne Storm, thanked the club for their unwavering support and took pride in leading the team.
CEO Cameron George praised Harris’s leadership during difficult times, especially when the team was based in Australia during the pandemic, while head coach Andrew Webster lauded his influence and support.
Harris led the Warriors 52 times since his 2022 captaincy appointment, with his last game being a 2023 victory over Brisbane. His accolades include two Simon Mannering Medals and a Dally M nomination, and his departure leaves a lasting legacy at the club as they look ahead to naming a new captain for the 2025 season.
