Staff at Tokyo Bay, a Japanese restaurant on Auckland’s North Shore, endured a terrifying ordeal on Sunday night when armed robbers smashed through safety glass with hammers and threatened them while demanding cash.

The incident occurred at 9:25 p.m., shortly after the restaurant had closed for the night. Five staff members, including a new employee on her first shift, used chairs to protect themselves as the two masked offenders—armed with various sharp objects—aggressively searched for money. According to a report in legacy media the robbers fled with $400 in cash, leaving behind shattered glass, blood from a cut sustained during the break-in, and a scene of destruction.

The eatery remained closed on Monday, resulting in thousands of dollars in lost earnings and extensive property damage. Police arrived quickly, cordoning off the area and launching an investigation, with forensic analysis underway.
