KiwiRail failed to act on Coroner’s safety recommendations before Matamata teen’s death

KiwiRail did not implement a 2012 Coroner’s recommendation to fence off a hazardous section of railway in Matamata, where 13-year-old Sarie Morton was fatally struck by a train this week.

The recommendation followed the 2012 death of 15-year-old Zakariah Paul Lang, who was also hit by a train near the same area.

Coroner Peter Ryan had deemed the location “inherently dangerous” due to poor visibility caused by trees and shrubs and urged KiwiRail to install fencing or clear vegetation to prevent further fatalities.

Despite his warnings, the area remained unfenced, with only one pedestrian crossing nearby.

KiwiRail has since stated it is reviewing the matter with local authorities, while Matamata Mayor Adrienne Wilcock said safety measures would be considered after investigations into Sarie’s death are complete.
