Te Pāti Māori MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi has denied allegations from her party’s leadership that she overspent her electorate budget by up to $133,000, insisting her Tai Tokerau funds “have not ever been overspent.”
In a social media statement, Kapa-Kingi said budget adjustments were made with approval from the Speaker to cover extra staffing for the late MP Takutai Tarsh Kemp and her own duties as Party Whip. She expressed confusion over why the issue was publicised without context, saying the leadership had initially approved the arrangements. While she did not address questions about hiring her son in her office, Kapa-Kingi said she remained committed to serving her electorate and focusing on the work that “unites us.”
