Teenage golf prodigy Emanuele Galeppini has been identified as the first confirmed victim of a devastating fire at a Swiss ski resort that killed dozens of young people celebrating the New Year.
The 17-year-old from Genoa was regarded as a rising talent, competing across Europe and the Middle East, with recent appearances in Dubai, Bahrain and the UAE.
The blaze tore through a packed bar in the early hours of Thursday, killing between 40 and 47 people and injuring at least 115, many critically.
Survivors described chaotic scenes as flames spread rapidly through ceiling materials, trapping people in narrow stairways. Hospitals across Switzerland are treating victims with severe burns, while foreign embassies race to identify missing nationals. Five days of national mourning have been declared.
Interesting its usually the smoke that gets You first.
Some people die a long way from the source of the fire not just from burns.
Fatalities can occur far from the flames, and burns are often not the main cause.
Several other dangers can be just as deadly, sometimes more so.
Smoke inhalation.
This is the leading cause of death in structural fires.
Toxic gases.
Heat without direct contact.
Structural collapse.
Disorientation.
Robert Louis Stevenson the famed writer used to carry a rope with Him for exiting in the case of a fire.
The Jack Bruce song ‘Weir of Hermiston’ is a reference to Robert Louis Stevenson’s unfinished Novel of the same Name – Who died in 1894.

A rope would be quite handy if You still had Your faculties about You and hadn’t been overcome by smoke inhalation
