France has suspended high school classes nationwide for the rest of the week after the biggest day of unrest yet.

Five regional councils have put the damage at about €40 million so far. National Rally president Jordan Bardella said the footage showed “what France has become after decades of laxity and mass immigration”.

Marine Le Pen, the presidential frontrunner, appears to have benefited from the chaos. Her odds of winning on betting site Polymarket rose from about 39% to 45% in the last week.

Former Génération Identitaire spokeswoman Thaïs d’Escufon said the only peaceful solution is to send the rioters “back to their countries of origin they love so much”.

In 2021, about 20 retired generals and more than 1,000 other military personnel warned Macron in an open letter that “Islamism and the hordes of the banlieue” could bring civil war.
